Conversation Skills
A conversation can be a determinant factor in any kind of relationship. Weather it is with your colleagues, with your family , boss or clients the conversation and your conversation skills have to be well thought . Developing your conversation skills is a lovely investment in your future. By improving your conversation skills you talk with confidence. You have the ability to talk to almost any person attracting friends and business clients twice the rate as you would without such skills. Many people have a wrong conception about what conversation skills mean. A person who is very energetic, starts a conversation and it`s easy to talk to, does not mean he has conversation skills. These skills are gained harder that it looks. The key to a good conversation is to listen , to understand and to ask questions related to the topic discussed.
There are three aims and purposes of a good conversation. The first is the plain enjoyment and pleasure of self-expression and interaction with other people; it`s not a mystery that the conversations you have with your friends are more interesting and captivating that with anyone else, because you like to talk to people with whom you have things in common. The second aim or purpose of conversation is to get to know the other person better. This can`t be achieved in a short meeting, but for example in sales you can try to get to know somebody by asking questions and listening to their point of view. The third aim of conversation is to build trust and credibility. Trust is a very hard thing to obtain but after a few interesting conversations, the impression you leave is a good one and trust builds itself.
A person with good conversation skills has to have the ability to ask questions and to listen very carefully to the answers. You can show your ideas, thoughts and opinions in a conversation, but the very best conversationalists seem to be low-key, easy-going, cheerful, and interested in the other person. They seem to be quite content to listen when other people are talking and they make their own contributions to the dialogue rather short and to the point. The key is to ask open questions that cannot be answered with “yes” or “no” and in this way the conversation has a certain fluidity, one question leads to another. Another tip on how to obtain great conversation skills is to nod, smile and agree or/not, to the person your having a conversation with. This will show that you are listening and that you are interested. You should also try not to interrupt while somebody is speaking.
A conversation can be very difficult if you have a partner that is shy or grumpy or that doesn`t agree with you. The key is to find a subject that you both find interesting. In a more crowded group, the conversation has to pass from one person to another, so that everyone has something to say about the topic. This is a very important tip on how to have great conversation skills, let others talk and don`t monopolize the entire discussion.
